It was a shame that Unpackaged had to leave its little premises in the Old Dairy in Islington, but here in Hackney, we’re delighted – on so many counts.
The Unpackaged ‘mission’ is to reduce the crazy amounts of packaging in the world, and it does exactly what it says on the tin, glass jar, tupperware, old takeaway carton, brown paper bag or bottle.
Here’s how it works: simply weigh your own packaging, then fill it with whatever takes your fancy – olives, dried goods, olive oils, fresh fruit and veg, bread, pastries and much more. Unpackaged will weigh it and price it at the end. Pay, take it home, and then, when you’ve run out of whatever it is, come back for a refill. Genius!
Oh, and they favour organic, seasonal, artisan, local, and apply the principles of ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ where waste is concerned. They even plan to minimise their own transportation. So, all the right credentials then…
But there’s more. With their lovely expanded space, Unpackaged has broadened its remit…
On Saturday, we popped in for breakfast. A menu of delights included toast with eggs (any style), tortilla sandwich, mushrooms with truffle and, of course, a delicious range of pastries and excellent coffees. But I had to try the cheese and onion toastie, served with a pile of peppery rocket. I can confirm that it was so good that I’m keen to pop back regularly to run through the rest of the menu.
And that’s not all. The same things happens at lunchtime. New menu, new delicious dishes…
And now I discover that the bar is open in the evening too. My joy is complete. Welcome to Hackney ‘Unpackaged’!
